Tips and Tricks to get the optimal vacation property experience:
When to go & When to book:
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Hilton Head. To get the best value, shift your family's Hilton Head vacation dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites usually offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Often, property management companies supply Hilton Head area travel guides which include special offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Make a plan and pick the right Hilton Head rental:
- Start by selecting the best vacation week and a budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Sunny & bright, dog-friendly condo w\/ golf course view plus shared pool & tennis has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before booking your home. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
- Visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
During your stay:
- Get the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would at home.
- During arrival, document any damages to the property and immediately contact the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Respect your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all personal items. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a great stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
