Strategies to get the perfect Hilton Head rental experience:

Cost saving strategies:

  • June, July, and August are high season in Hilton Head. To find the best rental home within your budget, we highly recommend reserving in Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at Hilton Head restaurants, tours, and activities.
  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property management companies often offer renters an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Look for your local Hilton Head area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guide magazines contain deals for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

Make a plan and choose a perfect Hilton Head rental:

  • Start by having your family decide on the best dates and a max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Family-friendly condo w/ golf course views plus a shared pool & tennis courts has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking websites. Otherwise, call the host before you reserve your home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine what is optimal for your trip.
  • Looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or charges applied to your contract.

More considerations:

  • Get the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. Store the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Make a record of any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if damages are assessed.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, stereo or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of difficulties.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your quiet neighborhood. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would've not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are gone! Don't let thieves ruin your vacation.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all belongings. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent feedback to stimulate more bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation rental. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
