Strategies to get the optimal Hilton Head rental home experience:
When to visit & When to book:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the most suitable vacation home within budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Property management companies usually offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines contain coupons for local shops and restaurants.
How to choose the perfect rental:
- First and foremost, have your family decide on date ranges and a maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Ocean-view designer remodeled suite with workspace, pickleball, hot tub & pool has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is regularly available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, contact the property manager before you reserve the rental. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to establish what is optimal for your group.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
- Are you visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
More considerations:
- Store the manager's information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent quite a few problems.
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Record any issues with the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if damages are assessed.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an incredible resource to find the best local attractions.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Double-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the property a final time and look for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
