Our top Hilton Head vacation rental tips:
When to book & When to go:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. Reserve your rental property in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some property management companies offer discounts for veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Property management companies frequently offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guide magazines have money saving offers on local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Selecting the best vacation rental:
- Start by having your family select dates and a spending budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Enjoy expansive ocean and pool views from your private balcony. has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is almost always available online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property manager before reserving the vacation property. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- If there's an individual Hilton Head attraction you simply love, look for homes that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or costs might be applied to your invoice.
During your stay:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
- During check-in, document any damages to the property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, take video of the property to record its condition.
- Leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to drive new reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
