How to book the best vacation rental experience:

Sticking to a rental home budget:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To get the largest rental for your budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular Hilton Head attractions. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Many property management companies supply Hilton Head area travel guide magazines which often include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

How to pick the perfect vacation home in the Hilton Head area:

  • Select dates and spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Tropical Condo with Pool, Hot Tub, Lagoon Views from Balcony - Beach Access has 2 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hilton Head rentals search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed types is almost always available online. If not, email or call the host before you book the property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine which bed configuration is right for your group.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and some don't. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the owner about your furry family members before booking.
  • If there's a particular Hilton Head destination you long to visit, search for rentals that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.

More tips for your visit:

  • We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental home while you're out. Keep your property safe!
  • Record any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if there is a dispute.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Just prior to departing, complete a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a great time? Many rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
