Vacation rental tips and tricks:

Sticking to your budget:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Hilton Head area. To find the most suitable vacation home for your budget, we strongly suggest reserving in Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites typically offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Hilton Head area magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides contain coupons for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

How to select the best rental home:

  • Select your vacation dates and max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. 18 Sand Dollar, Oceanfront, Pool, Hot Tub, Free Golf, Elevator has 7 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hilton Head rentals search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally accessible online. If you don't see them listed, email the property management company before reserving your rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to work out what bed configuration is right for your trip.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction or event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or could be applied to your contract.

More considerations:

  • Add the host's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • To make certain that damages aren't attributed to your visit, make a record of any problem areas upon check in. Contact the rental manager right away to record any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great resource to find the best local beaches and hangouts.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're gone! Don't let burglars ruin your vacation.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a wonderful vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
