Tips to get the best Hilton Head vacation property experience:
Sticking to a spending plan:
- In the Hilton Head area, The earlier your group can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Booking your rental home six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your rental.
- Summer is the most expensive season in the Hilton Head area. To get the best value, shift your family's Hilton Head vacation to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your family qualifies for a special rate.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
- Look for your local Hilton Head visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guides have deals for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Narrow your Search:
- Choose a designated group leader, select your dates, and choose a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Large Sprawling Home Very Close to the Beach and Activities! has 6 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is normally accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before you reserve your rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what is optimal for your group.
- Some rentals allow pets, but others do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask your host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- Visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
Additional considerations:
- Be sure you get the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many difficulties.
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would back home.
- Document any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a terrific time? Many rental websites make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
