Tips to get the very best Hilton Head vacation rental experience:

Getting the best rental value:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Hilton Head area. To find the best value, shift your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Some owners offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Booking websites often offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Often, property management companies supply Hilton Head area travel guides which include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • Choose your dates and max budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Large Home with Panoramic Views of Robert Trent Jones Golf Course and Lagoon! has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. If they are not listed, contact the property manager before reserving the home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine what configuration is optimal for your trip.
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or charges applied to your contract.
  • If there's a particular Hilton Head destination you crave, search for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

Some things to know before you go:

  • Put the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, television set or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of concerns.
  • Lock your rental property while you are away! Don't let thieves ruin your vacation.
  • To ensure that damages are not attributed to your family's visit, make a record of any problem areas when you arrive. Call the host right away to relay your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors disrupting your peaceful home life. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Re-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take photos of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a great vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
