Tricks and tips for getting the best Hilton Head vacation rental experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is the most expensive season in coastal SC. Booking a rental in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
  • Property managers typically offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Look for your local Hilton Head visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guides contain offers and deals for nearby shops and restaurants.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Start by selecting your trip dates and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. First-floor condo close to the beach & golf w\/ shared pool & tennis courts! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available on booking websites. Otherwise, email the host before booking the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You'll need to establish what configuration is best for your vacation.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Tips for a great stay:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Lock your rental property while you are away! Don't let crooks spoil your trip.
  • Note any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Double-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a wonderful time? Most rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
