Strategies to get the perfect rental experience:
Finding the best value:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal SC. To get the best value, change your family's Hilton Head vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
- Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Property managers sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines have deals for local accommodations and attractions.
How to select the best rental in the Hilton Head area:
- First, have your family agree to date ranges and a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. 3 Bed/4 Bath Sleeps 10 Townhouse Style Villa in Palmetto Dunes With Golf View has 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available on booking pages. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before you reserve your home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks.
- Visiting for a specific event? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly vacation rental. Ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
Some things to know before you go:
- Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- At Check-in, document any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Lock your rental property while you are away! Don't let thieves ruin your vacation.
- On check-out day, take a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget anything. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition.
- Did your group have a fantastic stay? Most rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
