Getting the best Hilton Head vacation home experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To book the largest rental within budget, we highly recommend reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular attractions and restaurants. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Often, management companies supply Hilton Head area visitor guides which include special offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

How to choose the perfect vacation rental:

  • Choose vacation dates and spending budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Large Three Bedroom Villa Steps from the Pool! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is regularly accessible on booking websites. If not, contact the property owner before reserving your home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or charges could be applied to your agreement.
  • Visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Additional considerations:

  • Add the owner's contact information to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, television set or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent lots of concerns.
  • Lock your rental home while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • Note any damages to the property at check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Re-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a wonderful stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
