Our top Hilton Head vacation rental tips:
When to visit & When to reserve a Hilton Head rental home:
- In the Hilton Head area, The sooner you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved very early. Reserving your vacation home up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your rental.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Hilton Head. To get the best value, shift your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and even October offer pleasant temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, travel guides contain money saving offers on nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Choose a designated group leader, choose your vacation week, and choose a max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Large Three Bedroom Villa Steps from the Pool! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property owner before booking the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Some rental properties allow pets, but others don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- Visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking
Tips to have a great stay:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many problems.
- Keep your rental home locked while you are out! Don't let crooks spoil your holiday.
- Note any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if a dispute is filed.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome visitors disrupting your home life. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would have not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all belongings. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your family have a great stay? Many rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
