Our top Vacation rental booking tips:
Get the most from your spending budget:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. To find the best value, try shifting your family's Hilton Head vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Booking websites usually offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hilton Head area visitor guide magazines which will include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Filter your rental search:
- To start, have your family commit to the best dates and a spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Quiet Getaway with Pools, Hot tub, Tennis Courts, and Ocean Views has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, contact the property owner before you book the rental. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your family.
- Do your family pets travel with you? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or charges may be applied to your contract.
- Visiting for a specific attraction or event? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
More considerations for your visit:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Save the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would back home.
- During arrival, document any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Respect your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the property one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a great vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
