Tricks and tips for getting the perfect Hilton Head vacation home experience:

Find your perfect vacation home:

  • To get the best value, shift your trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warm weather, , and reduced traffic.
  • Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
  • Property management companies typically offer their guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides contain offers and deals for nearby tours and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • To start, have your group choose date ranges and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Luxurious all-suite home with a private pool and hot tub in a backyard paradise has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally available online. Otherwise, email or call the host before you book the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches. You'll need to work out which bed configuration is suitable for your family.
  • Does your family require special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the best rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
  • If your family is bringing pets, search for a pet-friendly property. Get specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.

More tips for your stay:

  • Get the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your .
  • Make a record of any damages to the property at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if there is a dispute.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents quite a few issues.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your life at home. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to make sure you didn't leave anything behind. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Hosts rely on great feedback to inspire new reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your review find their best rental home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
