Tricks and tips to get the perfect Hilton Head rental home experience:

How to get the best rental home value:

  • The earlier your group can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are reserved very early. Booking your rental property up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season in the Hilton Head area. To find the best value, shift your family's Hilton Head trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer great weather, , and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Some owners offer discounts for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Booking websites often offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines have deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.

How to select the best rental home in the Hilton Head area:

  • Choose vacation week and maximum budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the bed configuration you need. Home with private pool, fenced in yard and dog-friendly has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before booking your home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You will need to establish what bed configuration is suitable for your vacation family.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the property manager about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental

Tips for a smooth stay:

  • Be sure you get the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental. Store the host's information in your smartphone.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are away, just like you would at home.
  • To ensure that no damages are linked to your visit, inspect the property for any problem areas during arrival. Speak to the host immediately to report your findings. If there is a dispute, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome visitors disrupting your peaceful home life. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Re-check the property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a fantastic vacation? Many rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property management company was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
