Tricks and tips to get the very best vacation rental experience:
Finding your perfect vacation home:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are the most expensive season in Hilton Head. Book your vacation home in Spring or Fall to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property management companies frequently offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides contain coupons for local tours and attractions.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- To start, have your group choose a vacation week and a budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Large Golf Course Villa with Lots of Space for Everyone! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hilton Head vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally available on booking websites. Otherwise, reach out to the property owner before you book the vacation home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You will need to establish which bed configuration is suitable for your vacation group.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a particular Hilton Head destination you love, search for homes that are either near by, or those that cater to your requirements.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.
Tips for a great stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would back home.
- Document any issues with the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are assessed.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a great stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
