Tricks and tips to get the best rental experience:

How to get the best value:

  • Summer is high season in the Hilton Head area. Reserve your Hilton Head vacation in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some property managers offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites typically offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hilton Head area visitor guides which include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Start by having your family commit to a vacation week and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Spacious, Renovated House with Private Spa and Private Pool has 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts is often accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, call the host before booking the vacation property. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Are you looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, filter your search for a rental that allows animals. Request information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Often, hosts charge additional pet fees.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your . Put the host's information in your smartphone.
  • During check-in, document any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an excellent source for finding the best local scenic spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would back home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on great feedback to drive more reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your review find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
