Vacation rental booking tips:
Sticking to a rental budget:
- The earlier you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental home six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
- Summer is the most expensive season in Hilton Head. To get the best value, try shifting your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warm weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Some hosts offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers usually offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines contain deals for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Narrow your Search:
- First and foremost, have your family agree to vacation dates and a max budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Coastal resort condo with pool, tennis courts, beach access, golf, new deck has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property owner before you reserve the property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or costs may be applied to your invoice.
- Visiting for a single attraction? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
Some things to know before you go:
- Add the host's contact info to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Record any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if a dispute arises.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- At departure, take a walk-through to confirm you didn't leave anything behind. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property a final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, take photos and video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on good ratings to propel new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will appreciate that you share your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
