Our top Vacation rental tips:

Cost saving strategies:

  • To find the largest vacation home within budget, we strongly suggest reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Property management companies frequently offer guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Hilton Head area magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines have coupons for local shops and restaurants.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • First, have your group commit to trip dates and a spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Inviting family-friendly condo with balcony, central AC, & outdoor pool has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally accessible online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property management company before booking the property. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to work out what is best for your vacation.
  • Is your family looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you will need a property that allows animals. Get information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home.
  • Note any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if a dispute arises.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often a great resource to find the best local spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are away, just like you would at home.
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a great vacation? Many rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
