Tricks and tips to get the perfect Hilton Head rental experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Booking your vacation home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is our best tip for saving money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties.
- Some property managers offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers typically offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Many property management companies supply Hilton Head area visitor guides that include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Make a plan and choose the bestvacation home:
- Start by choosing your vacation dates and a max budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration you need. Airy, lagoon-view condo with pool, hot tub & tennis - walk to the beach has 2 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hilton Head rentals search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally available online. Otherwise, email or call the property owner before you book your home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches. You'll need to establish what is suitable for your family.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or costs could be applied to your contract.
- Visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Additional considerations:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many difficulties.
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Document any issues with the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if a dispute is filed.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors disrupting your peaceful home. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal belongings. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a fantastic time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
