Our top Hilton Head vacation rental tips:
Get the most from your budget:
- Summertime is high season in the Hilton Head area. To find the largest rental within budget, we highly recommend booking in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular Hilton Head attractions. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- The earlier you can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are booked very early. Reserving your vacation property 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Booking websites usually offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Hilton Head area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guides have deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Narrow your Search:
- Select a group lead, select your vacation week, and select a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Luxurious all-suite home with a private pool and hot tub in a backyard paradise has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is generally accessible online. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before reserving the property. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Are you visiting for a single attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly rental. Request details on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
More considerations:
- Get the owner's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- To ensure that damages aren't linked to your family's stay, record any problem areas when you arrive. text the host immediately to relay your findings. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers bothering your home life. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Lock your rental property while you are out! Don't let burglars spoil your vacation.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected everything. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on good reviews to inspire new reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
