Strategies to get the best vacation rental experience:

How to get the best rental value:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer time is high season in Hilton Head. To get the best value, consider shifting your trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer pleasant temperatures, , and greatly reduced traffic.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property managers typically offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Hilton Head area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guides contain offers and deals for local shops and restaurants.

Narrow your Search:

  • First and foremost, have your family agree to the best dates and a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Very Large and Completely Updated Villa on the 11 Mile Lagoon System! has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hilton Head vacation rental search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is usually accessible online. If you don't see them listed, email the property management company before you book the home. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your family.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or charges might be applied to your agreement.
  • Does your group require special amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking

Advice for a smooth stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the directions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent quite a few problems.
  • Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • Document any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if damages are assessed.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Upon check-out, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not leave anything behind. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a fantastic stay? Most rental websites make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
