Vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
Get the most from your spending budget:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- To get the best value, try shifting your family's Hilton Head vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Property managers often offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Hilton Head area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines have discounts for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Filter your rental search:
- Start by having your family agree to date ranges and a budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. This villa is perfect for either a friends or family getaway! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is almost always available on booking websites. If they are not listed, contact the property manager before you reserve the home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to work out what is optimal for your vacation family.
- Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the owner about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. .
Advice for your stay:
- Put the owner's information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, television set or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent quite a few difficulties.
- Lock your rental while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- Upon check-in, document any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Record all coorespondence.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible source for finding the best local beaches and restaurants.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host is not available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a great vacation? Most rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
