Tips to get the optimal Hilton Head rental experience:

Getting the best rental home value:

  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are high season in the Hilton Head area. Book your vacation in the Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
  • Booking websites usually offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines have discounts for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Make a plan and pick the perfect Hilton Head rental home:

  • First, have your family select date ranges and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Spacious Condo with Beach Access, Shared Pool, Hot Tub, Ocean Views, and More has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible online. If not, email the property owner before you reserve the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what is right for your vacation.
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or costs could be applied to your contract.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? Try a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, intercom or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of concerns.
  • Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • To ensure that damages are not attributed to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas during check in. Speak to the host immediately to relay any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors bothering your peaceful home. Apply the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Re-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
