Tricks and tips to get the best vacation rental experience:
Getting the most from your rental budget:
- In the Hilton Head area, The earlier your group can reserve a home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked very early. Reserving your rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
- To find the most suitable rental within your budget, we highly recommend reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Booking websites usually offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines have coupons for local tours and attractions.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Start by having your group select vacation dates and a budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration you need. Beachfront getaway with WiFi, pools, hot tub, gym, washer/dryer, & central AC has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is generally available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property management company before you book the home. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out what configuration is optimal for your vacation.
- Some properties allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the property manager about your furry family members before booking.
- Are you visiting for a single attraction or event? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
More tips for your stay:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Save the directions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- During check-in, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers disrupting your peaceful home life. Use the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would've never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you have not forget anything. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did you have a wonderful time? Most rental managers make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
