Tips to get the very best vacation rental experience:
Sticking to a spending budget:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal SC. Booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Property managers typically offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guide magazines have discounts for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Begin by selecting your trip dates and a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Gorgeous new luxury beach house - be the first to experience this dream home! has 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hilton Head rental home search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, contact the property owner before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches.
- Is your family looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- Some rental properties allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the property management company about pet restrictions before booking.
Tips for a great stay:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Save the directions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
- During arrival, record any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of problems.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often an excellent resource to find the best local beaches and restaurants.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are out, just like you would back home.
- Just prior to departing, complete a final walk-through to make sure you have not leave anything behind. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take photographs of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a great stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
