Tricks and tips to get the optimal Hilton Head vacation property experience:
Getting the most from your rental home budget:
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal SC. Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is a great way to save on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your group qualifies for a discount.
- Property managers usually offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Hilton Head area magazine upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guides contain deals for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Planning and choosing the perfectrental home:
- First, have your family commit to the best dates and a spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Beautifully Updated Home Just a Few Minutes Walk to the Beach! has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available online. If they are not listed, contact the host before you reserve your rental. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- Looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to book a rental that allows animals. Request information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
More considerations:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your phone.
- To ensure that damages aren't attributed to your family's stay, note any problem areas when you arrive. E-mail the host right away to document any issues. If there is a dispute, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Hosts are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers bothering your quiet neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and attractions you would've never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property management company was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
