Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
How to get the best value:
- To book the largest rental for your budget, we recommend reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite Hilton Head restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some property managers offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Booking websites usually offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Often, property management companies supply Hilton Head area visitors guides which will include money-saving offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Select a group lead, select your vacation week, and select a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. Tree-lined home with golf course views, large deck, grill, fireplace, W/D, & AC has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly available on booking websites. Otherwise, email the host before reserving the home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- If there's a specific Hilton Head destination you crave, keep an eye out for properties that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
- Some properties allow pets, but others do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the property management company about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
Additional considerations:
- Be sure you get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone.
- Upon arrival, document any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great source for finding the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would back home.
- Double-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental one final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host is not available, take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a terrific stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
