Tips and Tricks to get the optimal rental experience:
Get the most from your rental home budget:
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Hilton Head. Reserving a rental home in Fall or Spring months is our best tip for saving money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
- Property management companies frequently offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Look for your local Hilton Head area magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guide magazines have money saving offers on nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Start by having your family choose a vacation week and a max budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Spacious Dog-Friendly Waterfront Getaway w\/ Kayaks, Ping-Pong Table, Hot Tub has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hilton Head rental home search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the host before reserving the vacation property. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches.
- If your family is bringing pets, search for a rental that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Usually, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a certain Hilton Head attraction you simply love, keep an eye out for rentals that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. .
Additional considerations:
- Add the property manager's information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few issues.
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would at home.
- At Check-in, note any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the host. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Upon check-out, complete a walk-through to make sure you haven't leave anything behind. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a fantastic time? Most rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
