Tricks and tips to get the perfect vacation home experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is high season in the Hilton Head area. Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is an excellent way to save on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
  • Booking websites typically offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hilton Head area travel guides which often include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Select your dates and budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Modern condo with private patio - close to golf, shops & dining has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available online. If not, email or call the property management company before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what bed configuration is right for your vacation group.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask your host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • Visiting for a single event or attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .

Considerations for your stay:

  • Add the owner's contact information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, television set or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of issues.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • During check-in, make note of any damages to the property and immediately contact the property manager. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often a terrific resource to find the best local scenic spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Re-check the property to confirm that you've packed everything at departure. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the host is not available, take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to drive more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
