Tips and Tricks to get the very best Hilton Head rental experience:
When to visit Hilton Head & When to book:
- June, July, and August are high season in the Hilton Head area. Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is one of our best tips for saving money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Owners sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
- Property managers usually offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Hilton Head visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines contain deals for local accommodations and attractions.
How to pick the perfect rental home in the Hilton Head area:
- Choose dates and max budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Gorgeous home with new pool in Sea Pines-Short walk to Harbourtown Golf Links has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking websites. If they are not listed, contact the property management company before reserving the property. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out what configuration is suitable for your vacation.
- Are you looking for particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or charges could be applied to your agreement.
Considerations for your stay:
- Add the property manager's contact info to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Make a record of any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be valuable if a dispute arises.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Lock your rental property while you are out! Don't let crooks spoil your vacation.
- Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a wonderful time? Most rental managers make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
