Tricks and tips to get the best vacation property experience:
Finding your best deal:
- In the Hilton Head area, The earlier you can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental properties are reserved early. Booking your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental home.
- Summer is high season in the Hilton Head area. Reserve your vacation in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines contain deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.
How to pick the perfect rental home:
- Start by selecting a vacation week and a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Ocean view condo at beachfront resort with pool, hot tub, pickleball & tennis has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. If they are not listed, call the property manager before you reserve your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to establish which bed configuration is suitable for your vacation family.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or charges could be applied to your contract.
- Are you looking for particular amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental
Considerations for your stay:
- Get the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few problems.
- Lock your vacation home while you're out. Protect your property!
- During arrival, make note of any issues with the property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers bothering your peace. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and attractions you would have not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Double-check the property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
