How to find the best Hilton Head rental experience:

When to visit Hilton Head & When to book:

  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season in the Hilton Head area. Booking your Hilton Head vacation rental in the Spring or Fall is a good way to save money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hilton Head area travel guide magazines which often include coupons, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Choosing the perfect rental home:

  • First and foremost, have your group decide on a vacation week and a max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Large Two Bedroom Villa with Four Queen Beds on the Lagoon! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. If you don't see them listed, email the property manager before you book your home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what configuration is best for your vacation group.
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or charges may be applied to your invoice.
  • Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. .

Additional considerations:

  • Store the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent many difficulties.
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let crooks ruin your trip.
  • To ensure that damages aren't attributed to your family's visit, inspect the rental for any problem areas upon check in. Speak to the rental manager right away to report any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a excellent vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
