How to book the best Hilton Head vacation home experience:
Finding the best value:
- Summertime is the most expensive season along the coast of SC. To get the best value, change your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer great weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property managers frequently offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
- Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines have discounts for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Select your dates and maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Family-friendly condo with balcony, outdoor pool, central AC, & washer/dryer has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking pages. If not, call the host before you reserve the rental. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to establish which bed configuration is best for your trip.
- Visiting for a single attraction or event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly rental. Ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, hosts charge additional pet fees.
Some things to know before you go:
- Get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
- During arrival, record any damages to the property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few problems.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors disrupting your life at home. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and attractions you would have not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would back home.
- Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a excellent time? Most rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your property and/or host was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
