Tips for getting the perfect Hilton Head vacation rental experience:
Find your best deal:
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Booking your Hilton Head vacation home in the Fall or Spring is our best tip for saving money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Some hosts offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
- Booking websites usually offer their guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Many rental management companies supply Hilton Head area visitor guide magazines which include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
How to select the best rental home:
- Start by selecting your trip dates and a maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. Family-friendly condo near the beach with balcony, central AC, & shared pool has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is regularly available online. If not, email or call the property management company before you reserve the property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or costs might be applied to your agreement.
- If there's a certain Hilton Head destination you are enamored with, browse homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Advice for a wonderful stay:
- Store the manager's information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent lots of concerns.
- Keep the property locked while you're out! Don't let crooks ruin your trip.
- Record any issues with the rental upon arrival, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be helpful if damages are assessed.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors disrupting your peace and quiet. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and attractions you would've never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the property to make sure you've collected all belongings. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property a final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the host isn't available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a fantastic vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
