Tips to get the best Hilton Head vacation home experience:

Sticking to a spending plan:

  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are high season in Hilton Head. To get the best value, try changing your vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent weather, , and greatly reduced traffic.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
  • Property management companies usually offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hilton Head area travel guide magazines that include special deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hilton Head visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

How to choose the perfect rental home:

  • Select your vacation dates and spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration you need. Deluxe Ocean Dunes Villa 205 - Stunning views of the Ocean and Heated Pool has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hilton Head vacation rental search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking pages. Otherwise, email the property manager before reserving your home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to work out what configuration is best for your vacation family.
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or applied to your invoice.
  • Does your group require specific amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.

More considerations:

  • We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent many problems.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Make a record of any issues with the property at check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if a dispute arises.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Upon check-out, take a walk-through to confirm you have not leave anything behind. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a fantastic time? Most rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
