Tricks and tips to get the perfect vacation home experience:
Getting the most from your spending budget:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal SC. Booking a rental in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- The sooner you can reserve a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are booked very early. Reserving your vacation property up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental property.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Property managers usually offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
- Look for your local Hilton Head area magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines have discounts for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Select a group lead, choose your vacation dates, and choose a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Lagoon-View Condo with Al Fresco Dining, Shared Pool, Golf Course & Beach Access has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is normally available on booking websites. Otherwise, email the property management company before you reserve your rental. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds.
- Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you must book a pet-friendly property. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
More considerations for your visit:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
- Document any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, elevator or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of issues.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Lock your rental while you're out and about. Protect your property!
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected all personal items. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your group have a terrific time? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
