Tricks and tips for getting the perfect Hilton Head vacation home experience:

Get the best rental value:

  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Hilton Head. Reserve your Hilton Head vacation in Fall or Spring months to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Some owners offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites typically offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, travel guides contain money saving offers on local restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Choose a group leader, choose your vacation week, and choose a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Bright two-story home w\/free WiFi, central A\/C, gas grill, private outdoor pool has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is almost always available online. Otherwise, email or call the host before booking your rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
  • If your group is bringing pets, filter your search for a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, property owners charge additional pet fees.
  • Visiting for a single event? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.

More considerations:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • To ensure that damages aren't linked to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas when you arrive. Speak to the rental manager right away to relay any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having the recorded issues and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often, adjacent homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Re-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a excellent stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
