Tips to get the very best rental home experience:

Get the most from your budget:

  • To get the best value, try changing your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer pleasant weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic.
  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some owners offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
  • Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides contain offers and deals for nearby tours and attractions.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • First and foremost, have your family decide on a vacation week and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Bright, newly-remodeled, dog-friendly beach house w\/ a private pool & hot tub has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available on booking websites. If not, call the property owner before you book your home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
  • If there's a specific Hilton Head destination you are crazy about, keep an eye out for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
  • Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or costs may be applied to your agreement.

During your stay:

  • Be sure you get the host's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your .
  • To ensure that damages are not linked to your stay, make note of any problem areas when you arrive. Make contact with the rental manager immediately to record any issues. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and places you would've not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let burglars ruin your trip.
  • Double-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed everything on check-out day. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the property one final time and look for damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the host isn't available, remember to take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on great reviews to inspire future bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will will be grateful for your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to fix it.
