description: A seed swap is a community gathering of usually gardeners, farmers, and plant enthusiasts, who have come together to share seeds. Seed packs are spread on tables, and people choose what they want. In honor of National Seed Swap Day, Coastal Discovery Museum will be hosting our very own seed swap event! National Seed Swap Day is celebrated annually on the last Saturday of January and presents a great opportunity for our community to join us in exploring new plants, supporting biodiversity, cultivating community, and seeking advice from other local gardeners.

For those wishing to swap seeds, seeds need to be separately bagged and labeled. Seed packs should include enough seeds to grow 3-5 plants and be labeled to include as much information about the plant as possible, such as: plant name (scientific names where possible), variety, growing conditions, and date harvested if known. Seed savers are welcome and encouraged to sit with their seeds to share information, tell stories, and monitor what is taken.

While native seeds are preferred, the general guidelines are as follows:

Allowed

· Open-pollinated seeds.

· Locally saved seeds.

· Excess-bought seeds.

· Excess seeds donated by a seed company.

Prohibited

· Seeds or plants that are considered illegal, either federally in the United States of America or the state of the event.

· Genetically engineered plants, F1 hybrids, poisonous, noxious, or controlled seeds, and plants.

· Patented varieties. Although it is legal for gardeners to grow and save patented varieties, it is illegal to distribute them. Refer to the USDA website for a list of patented varieties.

· Unknown seed from volunteer plants

This is a free community event, all ages are welcome! Children should be accompanied by an adult.

Meeting Location: Coastal Discovery Museum/ Farmer’s Market Field
