Tricks and tips for getting the best Hilton Head vacation property experience:
When to book & When to go:
- Summertime is the most expensive season in coastal SC. Booking your vacation home in the Fall or Spring is a great way to save on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hilton Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group.
- Property managers typically offer customers an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, travel guides have money saving offers on local accommodations and attractions.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Start by choosing your a vacation week and a max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Snowbird-friendly home with 2 decks, enclosed yard, AC, & WiFi - walk to beach has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available on booking pages. If they are not listed, reach out to the property manager before you reserve the rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is suitable for your vacation group.
- Are you looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or costs might be applied to your contract.
Additional considerations:
- Get the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
- Upon arrival, record any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents lots of issues.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors bothering your peace and quiet. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and attractions you would have never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to make sure you didn't leave anything behind. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your group have a terrific vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
