Our top Hilton Head rental home tips and tricks:
Finding the best rental value:
- Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Hilton Head area. To book the largest vacation home within budget, we suggest booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer renters an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Hilton Head visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guides have offers and deals for nearby shops and restaurants.
How to pick the perfect vacation rental in the Hilton Head area:
- Choose a group leader, select your vacation week, and select a spending budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Updated Condo with Lagoon Views, Shared Pool, Hot Tub & WiFI - Near Beach has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is regularly accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, call the host before booking your rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to book a rental that allows animals. Request information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property managers charge additional pet fees.
- Visiting for a specific event or attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking
Know before you go:
- Add the owner's phone number to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents lots of concerns.
- Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let burglars spoil your vacation.
- Document any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be valuable if damages are assessed.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers disrupting your peace. Use the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would have not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your family have a terrific time? Many rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
